All about Facebook!

This week in class, we read chapter four from Essentials of Social Media Marketing by Michelle Charello, and it focused on Facebook, which is one of the biggest social media platforms out there. Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg back in 2004 when he was still in college. Since then, it has grown massively and now has over 3 billion active users every month. The company behind Facebook is called Meta, and it also owns Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Because of this, Meta has become a multi-trillion-dollar company, which is pretty crazy when you think about it.

Even though Meta owns a bunch of apps, Facebook is still their biggest platform. According to the book, Facebook makes around $164.5 billion every year just from advertising. That’s a huge amount of money! People spend an average of 17 hours a month on Facebook, scrolling through posts, liking pictures, and sharing things with friends and family. One interesting thing I learned is that India has the largest number of Facebook users in the world. This makes sense since Facebook is an affordable and easy way for people in India to stay connected, especially with family members who live far away. For many people, Facebook isn’t just a social media site it’s a really important way to keep in touch.

Facebook has changed a lot over the years, too. It started as just a simple site for college students but now it’s a place where people share everything from daily updates to news stories. Businesses also use Facebook to reach customers through ads and pages, which is a big part of why it makes so much money. The platform keeps adding new features like Facebook Marketplace and Facebook Groups to keep people engaged.

Overall, Facebook’s huge user base and constant updates have helped it stay popular worldwide. It’s crazy to think about how something that started in a dorm room has become such a huge part of how people communicate today. Reading this chapter gave me a better understanding of why Facebook is still so important in the world of social media, even with all the new apps and platforms popping up all the time.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your thoughts on Facebook and how it has evolved since launching in 2004. It is eye opening to hear that India has the largest use when considering how popular it is in the United States. You did a good job conveying how Facebook has evolved into an important platform for businesses. I am interested to see if Facebook can keep its popularity with younger audiences.
